Osteoporosis patients unable to work out might get help soon, after scientists discovered precisely how exercise promotes new bone growth. The research might open the doors for new therapies and drugs that cause the same benefits to the bones as working out.
The research published online in the FASEB Journal shows that bone cell use cilia, a microscopic hair-like projection, to turn on bone-forming genes in response to mechanical loads.Researchers hope that the mechanism identified in this study could lead to new treatments for bone loss and other diseases involving …

Alzheimer’s disease could be detected in its earliest stage thanks to a low-cost behavioral assessment based on a memory test that correlates with hippocampal degradation. According to researchers changes in the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be detected by examining the information processing capacity.
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition that affects language, memory and related metal functions and the only reliable way to diagnose MCI is through magnetic resonance imaging. The new test offers a much cheaper alternative to MRIs which can cost several hundreds of dollars …

Breast cancer in women can be detected before its first symptoms after a group of Norwegian researchers at Diagenic developed a simple and efficient blood test called BCtect which looks for raised level of chemical markers for cancer picked up as blood flows through a tumor.
The Diagenic BCtect can detect breast cancer the size of a grain of rice even before it becomes visible through traditional methods like x-rays or makes its presence felt through the classical symptoms. So far tests have proven to be 75% effective in detecting …

XMRV, a retrovirus linked to prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome, may be inhibited by drugs used against HIV, according to researchers at Emory University and the University of Utah. XMRV was discovered in 2006 and has been detected in a majority of chronic fatigue syndrome patients as well as in some tumor biopsies from prostate cancer patients.
“Not all studies that have looked for XMRV have been able to detect it in prostate cancers or in samples from chronic fatigue syndrome,” says Ila Singh, MD, PhD, associate professor of pathology …
