Bisphosponate drugs may reduce the risk of breast cancer

According to a study by U.S. researchers drugs used to prevent and treat osteoporosis and similar diseases could lower the risk of breast cancer by almost 40 percent.
The study involved 6000 women between 20 and 69 of age which were interviewed about their bone health, whether they’d been diagnosed with osteoporosis and their history of bisphosponate use.  For testing purposes half had been diagnosed with invasive cancer and half not.

Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of bladder cancer

In a recent study, researchers from the University of California show a clear link between deficiency in exposure to sunlight and bladder cancer.
Exposure to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B, triggers the photosynthesis of vitamin D3 in the body, vitamin which was shown in previous studies from this research that in higher levels leads to lower risks of developing colon cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, ovary cancer etc.
The researchers created a graph with bladder cancer incident rates on the vertical axis and latitude on the horizontal one using worldwide data available through …

Simvastatin may impact our immune system in a negative way

Scientists from University of Siena conducting experiments using human cells discovered that simvastatin, a hypolipidemic drug used to control cholesterol, may impact our immune system in a negative way.
Research suggests that simvastatin impairs the ability of macrophages, white blood cells specialized in innate and adaptive immunity, to kill pathogens and also enhances production of cytokines which trigger and sustain inflammation.
“Statins are key drugs in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease,” said Cosima T. Baldari, Ph.D., a scientist from the Department of Evolutionary Biology at the University of …

Unlike other nicotine vapor delivery systems like Nicotrol …

Stopping blood flow in the arm prevents damage to the heart in case of attack

Danish researchers discovered that if people having a heart attack temporarily stop the blood flow in the arm it prevents damage and strengthens the heart in the event of future attacks.
The conclusion emerged from a study that involved 150 patients who were treated like this in the ambulance when the heart attack occurred. The procedure, which cut off the blood supply in a patient’s arm for five minutes using a standard blood pressure cuff, was repeated four times with a 5 minute break on the way to hospital and it …
