World’s first full face transplant

The world’s first full face transplant consisting in nose, skin, cheekbones,jaws, teeth and other features was recently carried out in Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital. The patient had suffered a car accident in the past that left him with  serious face trauma and deformation.
The operation was done in late March by a medical team consisting of 30 medical team personnel and it took 24 hours. The identity of the patient remained confidential, doctors stating that it is about a Spanish persons between 20 and 40 years old who is now recovering …

Kids who walk are on the right path to better health

A study undertaken by Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) for VicHealth had proven that children who walk to school are more active in their dayly activities then ones that are driven by car. The study also suggests that walking to school increases the connection between children and community.

HIV breakout prevented with minocycline – acne drug

Recently, scientists from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have discovered that an already in used medicine, that was treating acne since 1970s, targets immune cells in which HIV lies dormant and preventing their reactivation and replication.
Minocycline, in combination with a drug cocktail known as HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) will likely improve the treatment regimens of HIV-infected patients.
