Breast cancer in women can be detected before its first symptoms after a group of Norwegian researchers at Diagenic developed a simple and efficient blood test called BCtect which looks for raised level of chemical markers for cancer picked up as blood flows through a tumor.

The Diagenic BCtect can detect breast cancer the size of a grain of rice even before it becomes visible through traditional methods like x-rays or makes its presence felt through the classical symptoms.  So far tests have proven to be 75% effective in detecting early breast cancer and doctors hope the chance of detection will grow if combined with a mammogram.

The blood test that already saved a woman from having a double mastectomy is available at a private clinic for 499 pounds. The European Society for Medical Oncology organized a trial involving thousands of patients which will start next year. The Diagenic BCtect is currently being evaluated by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
