CurcuminCurcumin, long used as an effective anti-inflammatory treatment in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, could be used in treating chronic liver diseases like primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosis cholangitis, according to European and American researchers.

The researchers examined tissue and blood samples from mice with chronic liver inflammation who were given curcumin for a period of four and a period of eight weeks and compared the results with equivalent samples from mice with the same condition, but who were not fed curcumin. The results showed that the curcumin significantly reduced curbed liver cell scarring and damage as well as duct blockage in the mice that had curcumin added to their diet.

Authors of the study pointed out that curcumin is a natural product which may offer a promising treatment in the future due to its ability to target several different parts of the inflammatory process.
