Happiness can reduce the risk of heart disease

A study that took place over a 10 years period revealed that people who are usually happy an enthusiastic are less likely to develop heart disease.  The study coordinated by Dr. Karina Davidson of Columbia University Medical Center is the first research to find such a strong connection between positive emotions and a reduced risk of heart disease.
The study was conducted on 1739 healthy men and women over a 10 years period and assessed the participants’ heart disease risk. The study measured negative emotions like hostility, depression, anxiety as well …

Pipe and cigar smoking just as unhealthy as cigarettes

Even though cigar and pipe smokers don’t inhale a new study claims just the opposite. The study revealed that cigar or pipe smokers are doubling the risk to develop pulmonary diseases, a leading cause of death, even if they refrain from smoking cigarettes.
The participants to the study were persons between 48 and 90 years of age, all suffering from heart disease. From the 3528 subjects 56 had smoked only pipes or cigars; 428 smoked pipes or cigars along with cigarettes; and 1,424 smoked only cigarettes.

Fathers to be should not assist birth

British specialists consider that the father’s presence in the delivery room is not as beneficial for women as initially thought. Fathers transmit to future mothers tension and anxiety, therefore their bodies produce high amount of adrenaline. This hormone inhibits the secretion of oxytocin, a very important hormone during labor that induces contractions. Vaccine inhibiting the need to do drugs

American scientists from Yale University have developed the first vaccine against cocaine dependence. Until now the vaccine was tested on 60 drugs consumer volunteers, the results being compared to the ones obtained from another group that was treated with a placebo vaccine. For the first group, scientists observed a 50% reduction in the quantity of cocaine consumed after 12 weeks from inoculation. More specific, the vaccine introduces larger cocaine molecules in the body, more easily recognized by the central system. Therefore, the body starts producing antibodies attacking cocaine molecules before …

Home kit for cancer detection might become a reality

A sensor smaller than a human hair known as an acoustic resonant sensor is being developed by the researchers at the University of Missouri. The sensor uses micro-nanoelectromechanical systems to detect diseases in body fluids, including breast and prostate cancers.
“In a liquid environment, most sensors experience a significant loss of signal quality, but by using highly sensitive, low-signal-loss acoustic resonant sensors in a liquid, these substances can be effectively and quickly detected — a brand-new concept that will result in a noninvasive approach for breast cancer detection.” said assistant professor …
